What to Feed a Baby Squirrel After it Weans Off Formula

Hi! I'm William Sells from SquirrelNutrition.com. What to feed a squirrel after it weans off formula is one of the questions I am frequently asked. I am in the process of writing Blog responses to frequently asked questions so that I can refer people who write to a specific Blog, so as to save having to type and retype the same answers over and over.

Baby squirrels frequently start to wean around the 7th. to 8th week of life. They normally don't completely stop, but rather slow down in the frequency of feedings. I usually only offer formula a couple times per day when I see them start to refuse regular feeding.By the 8th week they are usually ready to start various solids and are in need of teething objects since their incisors are developed to the point of needing hard object to gnaw on to keep them wearing down because rodent teeth grow continuously. In squirrels, their incisors continue to grow until their 7th to 8th year of age. Since most squirrels life expectancy in the wild is only 4 to 6 years, they rarely reach the age of having to deal with teeth that have stopped growing.

We usually introduce Oak and Maple twigs for teething purposes. Babies enjoy shredding twigs and it is good exercise for their teeth and jaws. It is humorous to watch a squirrel chew on hard objects such as hickory nuts. They will exert so much pressure trying to wear a hole in a hard shell, that they will have to take frequent breaks due to muscle fatigue. The muscles in their jaw will get so fatigued, that when they take a break their jaw will continue to quiver and they often click their teeth in the process. I like to start my babies off on sweet potato. I do this because a baby has to learn to swallow solids. Baby squirrels almost always shred their introductory foods much in the same way they will shred twigs. By using sweet potato, it is easy to see the bright orange pieces of shred on the floor of their cage. When I stop seeing the shredded sweet potato, I know that they have learned to chew and swallow, so I start introducing other foods at this time.

It's important to keep in mind that once a squirrel stops taking formula, you need to continue to provide them with a daily source of calcium. If they do not get calcium, by the time they reach the age of 6 months they will suddenly lose the use of their back legs and their bones will become brittle and prone to fracture. This is a condition called Rickets or Metabolic Bone Disease and is deadly for squirrels if they go untreated.Squirrels are predominantly herbivores with the only variation being that they will eat an ocassional bug or worm. In the wild they will instinctively eat a diet that will keep them healthy as long as their is an abundance of the foods they normally eat. If natural food sources are absent, they will revert to their rodent ancestory behavior and eat whatever is available to stay alive. This is why they have been known to raid dumpsters and other atypical food sources.I rescued a pair of starving babies from under the eve of a roof that were so hungry they were eating the tar paper from under the shingles. They pooped tar for two weeks before their doodles turned normal. The bottom line is that squirrels will eat anything in a starvation situation.

They will also eat anything that tastes good to them, which can be a bad thing.Somewhere along the line, someone came up with the idea that field corn and peanuts were an ideal diet for squirrels. From a nutritional standpoint peanuts are not a nut at all, but rather a legume. They contain protein and fat which is marginally nutritious because the fat in peanut oil is not of the same quality as the fats contained in true nuts like hickory, walnuts and beechnuts, etc. Field corn is almost pure starch. Starch is converted easily by the liver into sugar. A steady diet of peanuts and field corn will make a squirrel fat, but it has almost no nutritive value. Contrary to popular belief, a fat squirrel is not a healthy squirrel. They can easily become diabetic and suffer from heart disease, neither of which is a pleasant way to die. Unfortunately,so many people get squirrels so hooked on peanuts and corn, that it is nearly impossible to get them to eat a healthy diet. But, squirrels will eat a variety of vegetables and fruit along with all kind of true nuts.

Squirrels also have their own personal likes and dislikes. What one squirrel will eat, another one will not touch. So, a “one size fits all” menu for squirrels does not work. At SquirrelNutrition.com, we offer food lists for squirrels. There's a list of foods that are suitable for squirrels, and another list of foods that should not be fed to squirrels.

You just have to experiment with different foods until you find the ones that a majority of squirrels like. We've developed a couple of products for wild and captive squirrels. Our Squirrel Nut Square Mix is designed for captive squirrels to provide them with their daily source of calcium. It's easy to feed a healthy diet to a captive squirrel because you don't have to compete with the corn and peanut crowd.

We also provide a free recipe for making a product called "Squirrel Biscuits." This is designed for wild squirrels, and is a sneaky way to get them to eat vegetables. It's a pecan meal based recipe, that is designed to be mixed with ground up vegetables and dried into crunchy kibble. All of our recipes are copyrighted, but we provide them free for your personal use. There is a request form at the bottom of our Homepage for requesting one or both recipes.

In addition to premade mix for Squirrel Nut Squares, we now make a daily supplement for your favorite wild squirrel(s) called, Squirrel Veggie Squares.  These are the same base mix as Squirrel Nut Squares, but we include three capsules of our exclusive fruit and vegetable powder that adds a squirrel sized dose of 24 different fruits and vegetables. If your favorite wild squirrel(s) are hooked on eating peanuts and corn, this is a great way to get some fruits and veggies into their diet, as well as provide a healthy dose of calcium and other vital vitamins and minerals.

I just saw this and I too, am fascinated by squirrels, we have a lot here on the Canadian border with NYS...northern NY. I have a small yard, but we have many squirrels, and peregrine falcons, and crows. I feed the squirrels and birds, and I wondered, will falcons eat squirrels or do they just go after birds? I like all my wildlife , but I think I will have my son build a couple nice squirrel houses, boxes, whatever you call them, this fall as the winter of 2014 was very, very hard. Love your site! Love squirrels!

Hi Neeny!

I just finished answering your e-mail. Falcons will eat any living mammal that moves and is smaller than them. Baby squirrels would be at the top of their list of items to eat. I'll go back to my e-mail and send you our plans for squirrel nesting boxes.

Hello Bill,
Thanks for all the wonderful info. We are raising 2 from a felled tree. Figure they are 6-7 weeks now. They are getting to the point of not wanting formula much.Well we're using goats milk. I see some people converting to baby rice cereal mixed with Gerber baby veggies or fruit and some formula or goats milk. I was wondering if you ever use such and also, what would it take to be able to get those box plans that you sent to Neeny? We have huge Hawks that I want to protect them from after release.
Thank you for any feedback!

I know no one has responded to this message in a long time, but I have an important question!!
A mother Grey squirrel has had babbies on our 11 th floor balcony. From the way her teets have shrunk back to normal, and the babies now look almost as big as her, I judge them to be about 8 to 9 weeks now?? Anyway, they are now poking their heads out of their makeshift home ( our now destroyed boxes of extra household stuff from the death of a friend , covered in a tarp), and she comes out on the railing now,(big mamma), and yells and screams throughout the day! Is she afraid to leave them in the presence of our cat (who I keep inside for now), cause she screams at the door alot, is she calling them trying to get them out, or is she calling for the father?? How will they make it down 11 floirs to find Food?? Should I give Them some twigs or sweet potatoes? Or nothing so they are forced to go down?? They won't come all the way out yet in day light, but I have been leaving water with a teaspoon of coconut milk out and it's gone by morning. I am afraid they will dehydrate now that they are weaned!! Should I call rescue?? Or can They make it down??? Thanks.
Please email me at [email protected]
Their names are Hooligan, Goonie, and Tramp ( not sure yet if their is a third, but named it tramp for girl or boy lol)😂😘.

This comment is in regard to using Ivermectin for mange. Per Bill's instructions I gave it to Charlene for six weeks. She has gone from a hairless, bloodied-tail creature looking near death to a perky, healthy-looking squirrel again. Her tail is not grown out all the way, and it is a little shorter from where it appears she chewed it off, but she is still with us. Amazing.

Thanks Bill for your advice.

How much should baby squirrels be fed after they are weaned?

Reply

Hi Christina!

You should only feed as much as the squirrel will eat at one setting, twice a day. You need to experiment to find the foods it will and won't eat, and serve the ones it will eat.

The biggest mistake people make is to provide a big smorgasbord of foods, and let the squirrel pick and choose. Often, they will hide their favorite foods and leave the rest. When this happens, they become picky eaters, because they know they have other food stashed away.

So feed only what they will eat, and remove any uneaten or hidden foods.

Sometimes you have to use tough love when it comes to getting them to eat the important things like a Nut Square for the calcium.

What I do is give the Nut Square first thing in the morning when they are hungry, and nothing else until they eat the Nut Square. Once eaten, they get their breakfast. They are smart, it doesn't take them long to make the connection that they have to eat the Nut Square to get the rest of their food.

Hi Bill,
Do you have any advice on how to get my squirrel to drink water? I've tried a water bottle and a water dish, but she does not like getting wet! She sticks her feet in the dish and gets her nose wet with both and walks away.

Hi Tina!

You don't need to teach her. Just leave the water bottle up, when she gets thirsty, she'll figure it out!

Hi Chris!

Sorry for the delay in answering. A full spectrum light, (grow light,) 4 to 6 hours a day helps them synthesize Vitamin D.

Other than that, Cod Liver Oil like we put in our Nut Squares helps, but notheing is as effective as full spectrum lighting.

Hello Mr. Sells. Thank you for your help on the runny poos issue we were having. The yogurt definitely helped. We also switched to your feeding suggestions.

So now the big question is: I started to order the squirrel veggie kit but wondered if I should order the nut square kit too. Feeding my 10 week olds one square in the morning and the other at night, with regular raw foods in between. OR has the changed veggie kit incorporated the nut kit and just one should be ordered.... hmmm
Thank you. Bobbi

Hi Bobbi!

Sorry for the delay in answering! Nut Squares and Veggie Squares are exactly the same base mix, with Veggie Squares being designed for outside squirrels because they don't get a lot of vegetables.

Feeding more than one per day is unnecessary as they are designed as a one per day supplement.

Hi Tina!

I don't feed anything with hydrogenated oils or any type of Soy,
( including Vitamin E Oil that is in a base of soybean oil.)

The reason is that soy oil is bio identical to the female hormone estrogen, and I just do not give my squirrels anything with hormone activity, especially male squirrels.

Thanks for writing!

If you write to me at [email protected], and request our food lists for squirrels, I'll e-mail them to you. Our blind squirrel and our rehab squirrels are not allowed to have the run of the house, mainly because they need constant supervision to keep them from breaking things, drowning in the toilet or setting fire to the house by electrocution when they gnaw on power cords.

I have an 11-week old female fox squirrel. She has had diarrhea off and on for the last 3 weeks. After treatments of Panacur. Metronidazole and Albon on separate occasions, there was an immediate improvement, but the diarrhea would always come back. I was feeding her recommended doses of the FV 20/50, and rodent block and rice chex for solid foods. Yesterday it was recommended to take her off the formula and it looks like it has worked, but have to wait and see now. I'm slowly letting her eat stuff now (walnuts & seeds) that I wasn't before because of her condition. At this age do you think I don't need to give her formula anymore as long as other calcium can be introduced ?

Hi Randy!

Sounds like your squirrel may be suffering from low digestive bacteria counts. The medications you have given to control symptoms can knock the crap out of good digestive bacteria, while allowing others like Candida,( or yeast,) to overgrow when they are withdrawn. If your squirrel is still willing to try to take formula, it means that it still has the ability to synthesize what it needs for growth and development from the milk fat in its formula. When digestive bacteria colonies are low in the gut, the fat in the formula passes through undigested and comes out as messy stools or diarrhea;

Here's what I would do if I had the squirrel: I would start feeding it plain yogurt with active live cultures, ( like Dannon plain.) Don't over heat it, because you want as much of the Acidolphilus as possible to get back into the gut and recolonize. I would give it a drop or two of Colloidal Silver three times a day, just in case it might have a bacterial gut infection contributing to the problem. And, I would switch from whatever commercial formula you are trying, to our homemade formula, starting with just scalded whole milk and gradually increasing the fat content by adding heavy whipping cream, ( a teaspoon a day,) to get the fat content built up in the formula.

The Ohio State University did a study of Squirrel Breast Milk over 50 years ago, and found that ir was up to 24% milk fat. Commercial formulas today are made from skim milk, that comes in at less than 1% milk fat. We have 4 babies in our rehab facility right now that have doubled in size in a week and a half on our formula, and not a single one has had a formula related problem. We have never lost a baby due to a formula or diet related problem.

If you write to me at [email protected], and request it, I will send you the link to the OSU Study.

The recipe to our formula is on our website: SquirrelNutrition.com.

Thanks for writing!

I have looked for the list of foods that are Do's and Do Not's for a weening squirrel, but I couldn't find it. From reading through the blog; I do see that Oak and Maple twigs are good for their teeth, that Sweet Potato is something I can offer,Avocado is safe to feed them, and that I should avoid giving them Corn or Peanuts. Past that I'm not sure what to give them. Does the fruit have to be dehydrated such as Apple or Banana Chips or can they eat fresh things like Apple, Banana, or Raisins?

Hi William, Thank you ever so much for having this page. My wife and I have found a young squirrel who is need of help. We took him in and made sure there was nothing severely wrong with him and gave him some water and put him in a box with a blanket and released him back in the yard for the night. As of today no show from mother and he is still in the box so my wife took him up so that we could take him to rescue tomorrow. Just going to keep him for one and don't want to do any damage to him while we have him. He has teeth and his tail is pretty furry already. He is wobbling when he walks but is pretty good with his paws when he climbs the cage. The cage we are using is from when my wife had rats so we thought it fine for him for now.

Hi Angie,

Your squirrels will be 5 weeks old when their eyes open. Although they have their Incisors teeth, they will not have their molars until they are 8 weeks old. Therefore, formula only until they are able to chew.

The reason the formula is not satisfying them, is because the fat content is too low. We have babies right now in our facility that only need fed 3 times a day, because we feed a high fat diet.

If you write to my e-mail address and request our recipes, food lists and timeline of squirrel development, I'll send them to you,

Hi Angie!

You can put Oak or Maple twigs in their cage to teethe on.

For a water bottle, spend a little more and buy a glass one with a metal lick tube. A plastic one will last 10 minutes. They will chew a hole in the top and flood their cage with water. Believe me, I learned that the hard way!

Hi Bill....
So the other day we had a juvenile grey squirrel come into our sunroom and stare at my husband, myself and 3 dogs...not run away, nothing. I grabbed a towel to bring him/her outside and still, didn't run away from me or my 5 month old Italian massiff. We let 'Itty Bits be and went inside. Later that night I found him stuck in our trash bin...agaun took him out and again just stayed and tried following me making this sad noise. (About a week ago there were 2 dead squirrels in the road and I'm assuming one was mom and maybe sibling.) It was roughly 40°f out @ 1am and after reading EVERYTHING i could find and still not knowing what the back to do to help the lil guy I grabbed a 18gal Rubbermaid bin, put a comfy amount of fleece and flannel fabric inside and under some fleece I put a few Ragu jars filled with very warm water for heat. Itty Bity snuggled right in. The next morning he was still suggled up and being concerned for its diet or it being hungry i placed a saucer or plain tap water and some chunks of carrot, ripped up lettuce/spinach and fresh strawberry pieces. I don't believe he ate or drank. Tried letting him out of bin, h tried getting back in. So, repeated the whole process and this morning I placed some fresh maple twigs, leafs, pine cones still attatched to small stick ..(with pine needles still attatched.....??) And a chunck of wood from a recently felled tree.
I called a local wildlife rehab and they said to 'let nature take its course, he seems old enough to figure out how to survive.....or not=nature. 😠😑 So not cool.
But, I don't know what to do, how to help Itty Bit or if hes even ok...I can't bring him inside due to a combo of my dogs and husband but I'm a bleeding heart and cant leave him to suffer either.......HELP!!! please!!!

Hi Samara!

I have all kinds of information to share with you, but I can't do it on this Blog. If you send and e-mail to my Squirrel Nutrition email address, I can send you all the attachments and advice you need.

You definitely have an orphan, and since it is refusing solids, it needs formula. This is the link to our formula page: http://www.squirrelnutrition.com/squirrel-formula.html . The poor thing is probably very hungry and dehydrated, so I would start with making this simple formula and get him fed.

If you send a picture with your request, (and include the tail,) I'll age the squirrel for you so you will have a better idea what to do and feed.

Use an eye dropper or a syringe if you have one to feed it.

I'll be waiting for your e-mail!

Hello William! I have 2 baby squirrels about 1.5 wks apart in age whom I've had a few weeks. They are doing great and starting to wean. Thank you for all the information on the weaning process. My question is, I'm concerned about releasing them. I started putting them outside during the day in their large cage to introduce them to the weather. How do they know to start looking for their own food. I figure I will continue to feed them but how do I know they will thrive out there. I guess I'm just worried because I love them so. Please pass on any tips, they will be greatly appreciated!

I have 3 baby squirrels and one of them get scared for some reason, won't let me feed it... it is healthiest of all the squirrels, active and all. But now it won't feed and wont let me touch, got under the bedding, is lazy now, whenever I try to feed it, it squeezes itself and runs away. I caught it two times. But SOMETHING IS REALLY WRONG. Plus, it was nibbling the cloth, so I tried to give it somewhat crushed corn grain, it didn't take that too. PLEASE HELP!

Hi, Ngm!

Sorry to hear that you have a squirrel that does not want to tame. Is it the same age as the others? Squirrels reach an age where they are wary of humans. Up to that age, they have no fear of them. If the squirrel was tame prior to this behavior I have no explanation of why it is acting this way now.

If it got badly frightened by someone it might act this way!

If it continues with this behavior you may have no other choice except to release it.

You could try confining it to a cage, ( if you are able to catch it,) and see if it calms down and starts eating. There's always the possibility that it may be sick. Either way, if you have it in a cage you can keep an eye on it and observe for any changes in behavior or health.

Sorry I can't be of more help!

Hi my daughter and I recently rescued a squirrel she looks like about 2-3 months her front teeth are orange and the ones below them are half orange and I think that means they're becoming adults. Well she keeps limping kind of, and she use to love it when we picked her up but yesterday she kept making like a growling/crying sound when we touched her but didn’t bite at all or scratched. She calms down when we pick her up a sort of way like laying down. At times she puts her head under her while sitting down like in a ball form. That’s all she does eat her food and drinks water. Please email back, we want to save this little squirrel.

Hi, Apolinar!

Your squirrel may be suffering from low blood calcium also known as early Metabolic Bone Disease. You need to start replacing calcium in your squirrel's diet. A squirrel's incisors teeth that grow continuously require a large amount of calcium. If they don't get it in their diet, their body will pull it from their bones. This causes the bones to become weak and painful and will ultimately end in paralysis and death if not corrected. This also explains the growling when picked up because it is painful to be handled.

If you write to me at [email protected] I'll send you a calcium replacement protocol developed by a Veterinarian and a recipe for a calcium rich supplement.

Our 8 week old squirrel doesn't seem to want much formula. I can get 8cc in him in the morning, but afternnon/evening he's not very interested. I know he needs calcium, can I try a bird cuttle bone? He is eating shelled pecans and walnuts. He also tries cauliflower, green bean beans and tomatoes. He loves avocado. We have raised a few squirrel babies. This one is a little challenging. Thanks for your time and input.

Hi, Peggy!

That's not unusual for a squirrel that age to only take a little formula when they are starting to eat solids. If you write to me at [email protected] and mention this Blog Post I'll send you information and recipes for your squirrel.

Thanks!

Hi,

I have 3 8-week old squirrels and suddenly 2 out of 3 of them are no longer interested in drinking the formula. I have a water bottle in the cage and the greens I give them are damp with water too. However, I understand the formula is best. Is it normal to suddenly wean themselves off of the formula? Is there anything I can do? Thanks for your support.

Hi, Eva!

At 8 weeks it is normal for them to start to wean. We continue to offer formula, but the introduction of solid foods is in order.

I have 2 squirrels since a month and they are 11 weeks old now .i have not caged them .. left free in my room and are very active n playful and quite independent ..ll release them after a week. Direct release them to wild will they b able to survive ? Because they are used to me but have no other human contact .. they have the free for humans .. I am so worried about thier release. What is a good age to release them .. how long can I keep them.

Hi, Pooja!

You will not be able to just release them without conditioning them to outside. They will be terrified of the outside the first time you take them out and this will be amplified by the fact that you have let them bond so closely with you. We do what is called a "soft release" that gradually orients them to outside. The first thing you are going to have to do is to get them used to being caged because they have to be protected from the elements and predators during this process.

If you writr to me at [email protected] and request the PDF file on how to do a soft release I'll send it to you.

Hi, Nicole!

What you are describing does not sound good. The only other thing I could suggest would be to give a liquid glycerine enema.

Something is obstructing his gut, It very well may be an internal injury that was not evident when you received him. I always advise people to not get too attached to a baby squirrel until you have had them for several weeks. The reason is that they are very good at hiding internal injuries,

All their internal organs are covered with a tough membrane called fascia. If the organs are injured they can bleed into the organ and act perfectly normal because the tough fascia contains the bleeding within the organ. The problem comes when the organ either starts to leak or fail.

The first sign is usually lack of appetite and difficulty feeding. As bleeding progresses, they become anemic and cold to the touch which indicates the onset of hypovolemic shock followed rapidly by death.

With severe bloating, my guess is that probably the attachment of a segment of the squirrel's bowel called the mesentery, (which supplies blood to the gut,) has been injured. When this happens, a section of the bowel stops working. If it stops working, everything stops and the content of the bowel just sits there and rots causing a buildup of gas.

If an enema doesn't get things going, then I'm afraid the baby is going to die. They're too small to do surgery to correct a bowel obstruction. Besides, it wouldn't survive the anesthesia!

Sorry, I can't be of more help!

Hi, Nicole!

I'm so sorry for your loss, but tell the naysayers who are trying to lay a guilt-trip on you to "Take a hike!" You did nothing wrong in changing formula. It just happened to coincide with the manifestation of an underlying problem that was beyond your control. If you lived closer I would do an autopsy and show you exactly what it died of!

The only thing that changing formulas can produce, ( when you go from low fat to high fat,) is the possibility that some of the increased fat can go through undigested and produce mushy stools. This condition is completely treatable by increasing the good digestive bacteria in the gut with plain yogurt with active live cultures,

What you described was an obstruction. Since you were not feeding anything solid to the baby, that would rule-out a mechanical obstruction like a piece of something blocking the outlet to the stomach.

What you were dealing with was a physiological obstruction and I strongly suspect that it was either a mesenteric infarct that caused a portion of the gut to die, or a condition called a volvulus, where the gut gets twisted and will not let things pass.

So, don't beat yourself up over it. When baby squirrels die, it always comes on suddenly and rapidly progresses to death. And that always points to a preexisting condition that was unseen and unknown just like a human suddenly having a heart attack or having an aneurysm suddenly rupture and bleed out.

Just remember that you gave that baby squirrel more love in its short life than it ever would have received dying alone out in Nature!

I found two baby squirrels today I'm my yard, I don't know if they fell out of a tree, but their mother isn't anywhere in sight, when my husband found the first one there was a black racer snake close by. There's a girl and a boy. They look alike and when they saw each other they hugged and cuddled. The girl is bigger and ger ears are open and she's active. The not is smaller and his ears are closed. I think that are 8 to 10 wks old. What do I feed them? Do they need milk and pedilite?

I would like to say thank you for providing this information... you helped me save a baby squirrel that was brought to me by a neighbor. Almost a month later, I am still waiting for a wildlife rehabber to contact me *eye roll* I live in Southeast Oklahoma and there doesn't seem to be anyone around here other than me to take in sick or injured wildlife. I have some experience with wildlife, as I was raised on a farm in Maryland, and also worked for a veterinarian for several years... but being handed a baby squirrel with her eyes still closed? Wasn't prepared, but your site and a few others gave me all of the information that I could ask for! Truly appreciate your time and effort to help!!
The good news is, Little Squirrel is doing wonderful, and is at or above the guidelines for her age, but she was the only one brought to me, so she doesn't really have any playmates. So, I try to take her outside for 30 minutes to an hour at least once, if not 2 or 3 times a day. She doesn't seem to be very impressed with outside, but I think she will be fine when it's time to reintroduce her, but in the circumstances that she doesn't... is there any advice you have?

Hello...I would like to have your recipes for your home made squirrel foods. I have 2 rescued babies that are approximately 7 weeks old. They are eating squirrel formula and purchased squirrel blocks with fresh vegetables being introduced. The bigger female of the two has not been eating much formula. They have a water bottle. The smaller of the two, is still drinking her formula. She was slightly injured from her fall from the nest, but has made a great recovery. Ferrel cats killed the rest of the litter and the mother squirrel. They were about 5 weeks of age when we saved them.

Thanking you in advance for your recipes,

Brenda

I rescued a little guy maybe he was like 6 weeks old. He was doing great, he was a very happy one and was very loved. What happened was that my youngest son was getting married in Florida so I needed to travel from PA to Florida so I got a wonderful friend and her daughter to take care of my little healthy baby, by that time he was already like 12 weeks old and very playful and happy. I gave my friend all his stuff, toys, bowls and cage. He looked like he was at home. He was a nervous while I was driving to my friends house but then he looked ok at her house. We put everything together and even though he was still a little nervous he was inside his cage. My friend texted pictures of him and he look fine on the third day of being in my friends house he pass away. I was heart broken and I cried a lot. My little guy called Mickey was gone!!! To this day I don't know why he died. He was happy healthy and ate with no problems. He did fail from a tree to a grassy area when we found him. What do you think it happened? Someone said that maybe he was missing me because of him been imprinted. IDK I would like your opinion on what was the cause of my little guy passing. Thank you in advance!

I rescued a baby squirrel about 5 months ago. I am not sure if she fell from her nest or was abandoned, but she has dental issues. Her teeth don’t line up at all in the front and they have to be clipped regularly because they don’t line up - making it so she doesn’t naturally grind them down herself. I have attempted to give her regular (soft) foods, like veggies and fruits etc, but she refuses to try eating them. She only wants formula, so I mix baby foods, yogurt, etc in with her milk and feed her with a bottle still. She has been growing at a healthy rate and seems to be doing very well. However, she has suddenly stopped wanting her formula. I can’t figure out why, but she is refusing to eat at all and I am starting to really worry about her. It has only be about a day, but she is so little and I just know she must be hungry by now :-( Is there any advice you can offer, it would be greatly appreciated

Hi William,

I've seen several sources say eyes open at 4 weeks and several say 5 weeks. I'm trying to determine the age of my babies. What do you say?

Also, at what age and how often should I let them have some sort of exercise? They are getting much more energetic and I feel bad keeping them in a box (it's a big box). I am guessing they are a couple of days away from being 6 weeks. Still sleeping quite a bit though.

Thank you!

Hi,
We're caring for an approx. 5-wk old babe and I'm curious why rehab sites say absolutely no milk products, yet I find other sites with recipes (like yours) mentioning full cream or goat milk, and I don't know what to do. Clearly it doesn't 'kill them' if you're using it. Is there a certain age then when it is dangerous for them? I'm using Esbilac now and am concerned that he needs more fat (possibly calcium). Advice?
P.S. - Just found your site today & will read more later. Good stuff, thanks for posting it.

Thanks for this wonderful information and resources. I've had my baby for about 2 weeks; he's done well and looks great even though I have not given any milk/formula-- just Pedialyte and water-soaked quick oats. He needs new and better food! I do not know where I will find tree twigs but I want the best for him. He's SO precious!

Please send me both squirrel biscuit recipes and information on soft release. We rescued 2 dead like baby squirrels on Apr. 16th after an all day rain and 40 mph winds, with 30 deg. Temps. My little grandsons found them on the boulevard under a tree. We were sure they were dead, soaking wet, ice cold, eyes closed, mouth open and limp. No sign of breathing. Took one we thought might be worth trying to save. Dried and warmed him on hot water bottle by fire place. Rubbed his back and chest and head. After about 11/2 hours he recovered. We got a friend to milk a goat for us. Grandsons went out and got the other one. We worked on him another 1 to 2 hours and were ready to give up when he moved. Now we have two very healthy, active, funny, smart and loving little boys. We are preparing them for release in a couple of weeks. We plan to put a wood duck house in our back yard ( town residence) in the tree with a food tray attached with a roof over it. They are now inside, sleep in a cat carrier at night and a homemade play area made from an appliance box with a screen door and battery light. The wood duck house is inside for them to get familiar with. I set the cat carrier on front porch for them to get used to outside. They eat avocados, pecans, walnuts, zucchini, bananas, blueberries, carrots, apples, cauliflower and artichoke leaves. still drink goats milk. Love to jump onto us and climb around. Love to have chin scratches. Fluff up tail and thump it up and down. I put them in a Rubbermaid tub before feeding milk and after they wake up and they go potty in the corner of the tub. (Wet). We estimate they are about 9 weeks old but not sure. Never bite us but are getting rather rambunctious now so will be hard to keep inside much longer. They have bark and branches which they chew on. Any advice? So afraid adult squirrels may attack them. Also have hawks and turkey volchures in our area along with a neighbor who doesn't like squirrels and rabbits. He would trap and drown it. Thanks for any advice and recipes.
